Mohammed Shami rules out of the Test series against Australia

Indian pace spearhead Mohammed Shami has been ruled out of the rest of Test series against Australia with a fractured arm, as per the report in ANI. The key pacer sustained an injury when he was hit by a fierce delivery from Aussie pacer Pat Cummins during India's second innings.

After that, he was forced to retire hurt, leaving his side at 36 for 9, their lowest ever score in the history of Test cricket. Notably, he didn't bowl during Australia's second innings as well and he was taken to hospital for scans to know more about his injury.

However, India lost the match by eight wickets. Although their bowlers tried their best, their batting department failed miserably.

"Mohammed Shami has a fracture and the chances of him taking part in the remaining three Test matches is next to nil,” a BCCI source told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

He further added that Mohammed Siraj, who has already impressed everyone in the two warm-up games with his bowling, is likely to come in the squad for the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne. However, Mohammed Shami's injury is a massive blow for India.

Apart from him, India wouldn't get the service of their captain, Virat Kohli as well as he is returning home for the birth of his first child. Even, their other key pacer Ishant Sharma too isn't available due to fitness reasons.

And their absence means Team India will have to depend on Jasprit Bumrah, alongside Umesh Yadav, Navdeep Saini and Mohammed Siraj in the pace department whereas Saini and Siraj are yet to make their debut in Test cricket.

In the spin department, they have Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav alongside the veteran R Ashwin.

While speaking at the post-match press conference, Virat Kohli said that he hoped India to bounce back in the series.

"I am pretty confident that the team is going to bounce back in Melbourne, and a few of the guys are going to realise their true character and how they can step up. I am very, very confident that we will definitely learn from this. I don't think we ever had a worse batting performance. We can only go upwards from here and understand that as a team we can do special things when we think of partnerships and batting together. I very, very confident that we will bounce back strongly in the next one. I have no doubts at all on that. You will see guys stepping up and realising their true character and doing the job for the team," he said.

The second Test will begin on December 26 in Melbourne.
